I Never Wanted to Homeschool My Kids… But God Had Other Plans

Growing up, I always believed that homeschooling wasn’t the right choice for me. I had this misconception that homeschoolers were isolated, unsocial, and lacked real-life experiences. I often said, “I will never homeschool my children.” But God had different plans for our family.

When we moved to the mission field, my resistance to homeschooling only grew stronger. There were so many reasons why I thought homeschooling wouldn’t be an option for our family:

  • “I’m not good at teaching my kids.”
  • “My children need social interaction and friendships.”
  • “I want them to be fully immersed in the culture we’re serving in.”
  • “I don’t have the patience for homeschooling.”
  • “I’m afraid I’ll fail as a homeschooling mom.”

Do these thoughts sound familiar to you? As a missionary mom, I completely understand how these concerns can make homeschooling feel overwhelming. But here’s the unexpected part—those very reasons I thought would prevent us from homeschooling actually became the blessings I never anticipated.

Homeschooling in a cross-cultural environment has allowed us to integrate our faith into every lesson and embrace the flexibility we need while raising world changers. God has used our homeschool journey to deepen our connection as a family, strengthen our ministry, and bring us closer to the cultures we’re reaching
